Criticism against Kanguva, Indian 2: Tamil Producers call for ban on YouTube reviews at theatres

The Tamil Film Active Producers Association has called for a ban on YouTube film reviews conducted at theatre premises, citing their detrimental impact on the box office performance of major releases. Recently, several Tamil films, including Indian 2, Vettaiyan, and Kanguva, faced significant backlash and negative reviews on social media platforms.
The producers' body issued a letter condemning what it described as "tasteless and hostile" reviews on digital platforms. Kanguva, in particular, was heavily criticized for its storyline, with viewers accusing the filmmakers of overhyping the project. The backlash reportedly slowed its box office performance, with the film struggling to reach ₹90 crore within its first six days.
“Our association strongly condemns the recent trend of personal attacks and incitement of hostility under the guise of film reviews,” the Association stated. It urged reviewers to focus solely on the content of the films, avoiding personal comments about producers, directors, or actors.
The Association also criticized the practice of conducting public reviews immediately after premiere screenings and first-day-first-show events, accusing some YouTubers of using sensationalist headlines to attract attention.
“No one reviews a restaurant by declaring their life has been ruined by one bad meal. If such extreme comments were made, those restaurants would take strong action,” the statement noted, calling for a more responsible approach to criticism.
While welcoming constructive and unbiased reviews, the Association urged critics to avoid spreading negativity rooted in personal agendas. "Critics have the full right to express their views, but this must not translate into spreading hatred on public platforms," the letter concluded.
