‘Don't the dead and the living they leave behind deserve better?’ : Supriya Menon slams media

Kochi: Producer and former journalist Supriya Menon has strongly criticised the live recording and widespread filming of the funeral of beloved Malayalam actor Sreenivasan, calling it an invasion of privacy and a violation of basic human sensitivity.

In a story shared on Instagram, Supriya said grief is deeply personal and urged the public and media to respect the privacy of families mourning the loss of a loved one. She expressed concern that the use of cameras and mobile phones during such solemn moments has crossed acceptable limits.

“Grief is such a personal emotion. To see a grieving family not have any space to mourn their beloved is so tragic. Multitudes of cameras/mobile phones everywhere. Selfie takers in the corners, people pointing to the actors walking in. Many of whom are mourning their beloved colleague. Don't the dead and the living they leave behind deserve better? What a spectacle every moment of life has become... Cannot imagine the pain of the family who are in the midst of this tragedy. Shouldn't we self-reflect and course correct? How much coverage is too much? Do we need to crowd around the last rites, beaming it for everyone to see... a broken down family trying to say goodbye to their Beloved,” Supriya wrote, emphasising that funerals should not be treated as events for live coverage or social media content.

Her remarks come amid widespread debate over the ethics of live-streaming funerals and recording private moments, particularly involving public figures.
