For many, the name Sridevi evokes memories of an iconic actor whose talent and grace captivated audiences across generations. However, few are aware of the close bond she shared with her lesser-known sister, Srilatha. The two grew up together, bound by love and mutual admiration, but they drifted apart later in life due to unfortunate circumstances. Eventually, they reconciled, reaffirming their relationship.

A shadow of support

When Sridevi entered the film industry, Srilatha was always by her side—her constant companion and unwavering support system. She accompanied the actor to film sets, award functions, and industry events, ensuring that Sridevi never felt alone in the competitive world of cinema. While Sridevi mesmerized audiences with her performances, Srilatha captured moments of her sister’s life on her personal camera, documenting Sridevi’s journey with deep dedication.

There was a time when Srilatha harbored dreams of becoming an actor herself. However, for reasons unknown, this never materialized. Instead, she embraced her role as Sridevi’s manager, channeling her aspirations into ensuring her sister’s success. Sridevi often acknowledged this unwavering support, once remarking, “My life would be incomplete without Srilatha.”

A rift between sisters

Srilatha was the first to marry, and her wedding was a grand affair attended by political dignitaries, including M. Karunanidhi, and Bollywood stalwarts such as Rishi Kapoor. Even after marriage, she continued to reside in Chennai, maintaining a strong bond with Sridevi. However, a tragedy within the family would soon change everything.

The rift between the sisters reportedly began after the demise of their mother. Sridevi’s mother had undergone surgery at a hospital, but due to medical negligence, she suffered memory loss and other complications, ultimately leading to her death. Seeking justice, Sridevi filed a compensation case against the hospital and eventually received a settlement of Rs 7 crores.

It was this financial settlement that reportedly became the cause of discord. Srilatha expected a share of the compensation, but Sridevi did not allocate any portion to her. In response, Srilatha took legal action, and the court ruled that she was entitled to Rs 2 crores. This dispute led to a complete estrangement between the once-inseparable sisters.

Reconciliation after years apart

For years, Sridevi and Srilatha remained distant, with no communication between them. It was only through the intervention of Sridevi’s husband, Boney Kapoor, that the sisters finally resolved their differences. The reconciliation became evident when Sridevi was honored with the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian awards. Srilatha marked the occasion by hosting a celebratory gathering at her home, signifying that the bond, though once fractured, had found a way to heal.

Sridevi’s untimely demise in 2018 left the world in shock. However, her relationship with Srilatha remains a poignant reminder of a love that once defined their lives—a bond tested by fate but perhaps never truly broken.
