‘Patriot’ release date: Mammootty-Mohanlal thriller eyeing April 23 theatrical launch

Chennai: The highly anticipated political thriller "Patriot," featuring a rare onscreen reunion of Malayalam cinema icons Mammootty and Mohanlal, is rumoured to be heading for an April 23 theatrical release, according to industry insiders.

While the production house has yet to issue a formal confirmation, buzz within film circles suggests the Mahesh Narayanan-directed project will hit screens during the peak summer window.

The news follows a Jan. 4 social media update from the film’s makers, who confirmed that principal photography had concluded. "That’s a wrap. Blood, sweat, belief. #PATRIOT marches on. See you on the Big screen," the team wrote, accompanied by behind-the-scenes footage of the star-studded set.

The project has generated immense interest not only for its lead legends but also for an ensemble cast that includes Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara, Kunchacko Boban, and Revathy.

A teaser released last year fueled fan speculation with its intense tone and high-stakes dialogue. The promo opens with a voiceover reflecting on a time "when this nation was controlled by the two of them," emphasising the "faith" and "trust" earned by the central figures.

In a pivotal moment from the teaser, Mammootty’s character warns of a plan to "bring social score to people," while Mohanlal, appearing in the role of an army general, asks, "There are three of us. Do you think you can stop us?"

Plot details suggest a narrative centred on "Periscope," a program integrated into a student laptop initiative. In the footage, Nayanthara’s character questions if the software is "watching them secretly." The teaser concludes with Mammootty posing a final, cryptic challenge: "Great Indian traitor... or Patriot."

Industry analysts expect the film to explore a struggle between socially conscious citizens and a government attempt to implement illegal mass surveillance.
