Actress Rukmini Vasanth is currently basking in the success of Kantara: Chapter 1, directed by Rishab Shetty, where she earned widespread praise for her portrayal of Princess Kanakavathi. The film marks a significant milestone in her career, further establishing her as a prominent talent in Kannada cinema.

Rukmini made her film debut with the Kannada movie Birbal in 2019 but gained major recognition through the 2023 two-part romantic drama Sapta Saagaradaache Ello. Her performance in this film earned her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress – Kannada.

Beyond her acting career, few know that she is the daughter of Colonel Vasanth Venugopal, the first person from Karnataka to be awarded the Ashoka Chakra—India’s highest honour for peacetime bravery.

Who was Colonel Vasanth Venugopal?

Colonel Venugopal was the commanding officer of the 9th battalion, Maratha Light Infantry. In 2007, he made the ultimate sacrifice while preventing heavily armed militants from infiltrating across the India-Pakistan border in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir. For his extraordinary bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra.

His military journey began at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun in 1988. Commissioned as a second lieutenant on June 10, 1989, Venugopal rose through the ranks—lieutenant in 1991, captain in 1994, major in 2000, and finally lieutenant-colonel in 2004. Over his 18-year career, he served in various strategic locations, including Pathankot, Sikkim, Gandhinagar, Ranchi, Bangalore, and several sectors in Jammu and Kashmir.

On July 31, 2007, Colonel Venugopal and his troops surrounded militants in a forested area of the Uri sector. Despite being wounded, he led his men in a fierce encounter, blocking all escape routes and ultimately neutralising the threat, displaying extraordinary leadership and courage.

Rukmini Vasanth about her father

Speaking at the India Today Conclave South 2025, Rukmini opened up about the impact of losing her father at a young age.

"It left a lasting impact on me because I was a child when we lost our father. At that point, to see my mother, whose life has been completely rocked and changed, take her raw pain and find a way to channel that to other people, to find a way to spread the immense privilege that reached our family, to find a way to disperse to people who don't have access, was moving to me. It instilled a strong sense of philanthropy, of taking your pain and making it productive,” she said.
