Mumbai: Actor Hrithik Roshan has addressed the ongoing discussion over the visual effects (VFX) in the first teaser of the Ranbir Kapoor-led film ‘Ramayana’, following mixed reactions from netizens.

The teaser, which also features Yash, Sai Pallavi, and Sunny Deol, was praised for its scale and music but faced criticism from some viewers regarding its VFX. Responding to the debate on social media, Hrithik shared a detailed note reflecting on his own experiences with visual storytelling and the impact of cinematic visuals.

“Yes, bad VFX exists. It's sometimes so bad it's painful to watch, especially for me, and especially when it's a film I'm part of,” Hrithik wrote. He recalled being inspired as a child by films like Back to the Future, describing how studying visuals frame by frame shaped his understanding of cinema.

Hrithik praised filmmakers who take risks on large-scale, VFX-heavy productions, citing films such as Kalki 2898 AD, Baahubali, Ramayana, and his father’s projects like Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish. “They risked all that money, and years and years of effort just so another 11-year-old kid could feel what I felt. To me, that’s noble,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of recognising the intention behind visual choices, explaining that different VFX styles exist to suit storytelling needs. “It’s like in comics or animation—some prefer ANIME style, which isn’t as realistic as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. You can like one style over another, but neither is wrong,” he noted.

Hrithik encouraged audiences to evaluate VFX based on its suitability for the story rather than only its realism. “Next time, don’t just ask, ‘Is it real?’ First ask, ‘Is it right for the story?’ ‘Is it making me feel what the maker intended?’ Debate it. But debate it with awareness,” he added.
