Renowned guitarist Atlee D Cunha passes away at 74

Thrissur: Guitarist Atlee D Cunha, who is a regular presence in the musical festivals across Kerala over the last five decades, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 74. The artist was the founder of four major music troupes based in Thrissur.
He played a vital role in shaping the careers of legendary music directors Johnson and Ouseppachan.
Atlee D Cunha died due to heart-related ailments at Amala hospital. For the last four years, he was staying at a flat in Anchery.
The music troupes founded by Atlee include Voice of Trichur, Musical Waves, Trichur Waves and Atlee Orchestra.
The first troupe Voice of Trichur was founded in 1968. In his illustrious career, Atlee worked along with renowned music directors, including Devarajan and Raveendran. Meantime, he learned to write music notes. He shared close relations with singers including KS Chithra and Venugopal.
Atlee was born into an Anglo Indian family in Vypin. He moved to Thrissur when he was studying in class 7 after his father, who was working as a forest officer, got transferred to Vadakkanchery.
Being a self-taught artist, Atlee had tremendous mastery over mandolin and guitar. Donning multiple hats, he worked as a music director in a few films and also in several serials.
Atlee also served in Akashvani and Doordarshan and had won several awards.
He is survived by wife Felcy (retired school teacher) and two children.
The final rites will take place at the Thrissur Mission Quarters Sacred Heart Latin Church on Wednesday evening at 4 PM.
