What’s next for Batman? From ‘Knightfall’ to Pattinson’s delayed sequel

DC Studios has unveiled an ambitious roadmap for Batman, with several projects now in motion across film, animation, gaming, and publishing.

The most prominent among them is Batman: Knightfall, a multi-part animated saga inspired by the iconic 1990s comic arc where Bane famously breaks Batman’s back. Directed by Jeff Wamester, the film is set to debut in 2026 and promises to faithfully adapt one of Bruce Wayne’s most defining storylines. The official synopsis teases a fierce showdown: “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”

While Bane will take centre stage, the film is expected to feature several other villains and moments that mirror the comic’s dark tone. DC has not yet announced the voice cast for the project, which will be written by Jeremy Adams and produced by Rick Morales, with Sam Register and Michael Uslan serving as executive producers.

In addition to Knightfall, DC will expand its Elseworlds storytelling through Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires (2025), an R-rated animated feature reimagining the hero through Aztec mythology. Meanwhile, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight (2026) will offer a lighter, family-friendly take on Gotham’s protector.

Fans of the Tim Burton era will also see the release of Batman: Revolution, a novel by John Jackson Miller that continues the storyline from Batman (1989).

On the live-action front, Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, starring Robert Pattinson, has been officially delayed to October 2027. Originally planned for 2025, the sequel remains in the scripting stage and will begin filming in spring 2026. While no villain has been confirmed, speculation has included the Court of Owls and Hush, though DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has dismissed many such rumours.

Parallel to Reeves’ universe, DC is preparing The Brave and the Bold, a new live-action Batman reboot within Gunn and Peter Safran’s interconnected DC Universe. The project will introduce a new Bruce Wayne alongside Robin, offering a fresh interpretation of the character.

Although delays have frustrated fans awaiting The Batman 2, the ongoing stream of animated, novel, and game projects ensures the Dark Knight remains firmly in the spotlight.
