Ronaldo-Georgina wedding rumour sends 2000 fans to wrong church; Cristiano’s reaction goes viral

Imagine walking into your own wedding and finding thousands of Cristiano Ronaldo fans waiting outside. That is more or less what happened to Portuguese couple Fabio Ramos and Fatima Nicole Cunha Teixeira, whose wedding at Funchal Cathedral in Madeira was unexpectedly turned into a Ronaldo fan gathering.

The couple had nothing to do with the football star. But rumours that Ronaldo was about to marry Georgina Rodriguez at the historic cathedral had already spread, drawing an estimated 2,000 people to the venue.

Many of those who turned up were reportedly wearing Portugal's No. 7 jersey, making it clear who they had come hoping to see.

Fabio and Fatima, who are from Madeira but now live in France, were supposed to have a private celebration with their family and friends. Instead, guests had to deal with a huge crowd outside the 15th-century cathedral.

Fatima reportedly had difficulty getting through the gathering and had to push her way towards the church.

One guest described the scene as completely surreal.

"This is crazy. Why does everyone think Fabio is Cristiano Ronaldo? The bride has been very upset, worrying that all the commotion will ruin her wedding day."

The confusion appears to have been so convincing that some fans reportedly believed Ronaldo and Georgina may have booked the cathedral using another name.

The rumours were eventually cleared up by Marcos Goncalves, the priest at Funchal Cathedral.

According to him, the church's ceremony that day was for Fabio and Fatima. There was no hidden Ronaldo wedding taking place at the venue.

Ronaldo also seemed amused by the whole situation. After the story began circulating online, the footballer reacted to a viral post with laughing emojis.

So why did everyone expect Ronaldo to be there?

The wedding rumours did not come completely out of nowhere.

Ronaldo and Georgina have been engaged since last year, and the couple's plans to get married have remained a subject of interest among fans. Ronaldo had previously indicated that he intended to marry Georgina after the World Cup.

More recently, Ronaldo's sister Katia Aveiro added to the speculation after sharing footage of herself arriving in Madeira and describing the occasion as a "party".

For fans, that was apparently enough to fuel theories that a major family celebration could be connected to Ronaldo's wedding.

Madeira is also closely associated with Ronaldo, who was born on the island, making the location seem plausible to those already expecting wedding news.
