Cinemascope: Connection between Sookshmadarshini, Hitchcockian films and Gandhinagar 2nd Street

Sookshmadarshini, the latest Malayalam thriller directed by MC Jithin, is currently running successfully in theatres. Starring Nazriya Nazim and Basil Joseph in the lead roles, the film has been receiving rave reviews ever since it hit the screens last week.
In a recent interview with Cue Studio, Jithin shared insights into the creative process that shaped the film. He revealed that Sookshmadarshini drew inspiration from films such as Gandhinagar Second Street and Thalayana Manthram (films he has watched repeatedly), which portray the dynamics between neighbouring families. "People have always enjoyed stories that explore the relationships between two households, especially when it involves a bit of conflict," Jithin explained.
Sookshmadarshini tells the story of Priyadarshini, a housewife, and her neighbour Manuel, woven together with a touch of thriller elements. Jithin added that the Hitchcockian influence comes into play as the story delves deeper into the suspense of their interactions. “When I considered blending such local stories with a Hitchcockian flavour, I realised it was the perfect combination for Sookshmadarshini,” he said.
Additionally, Jithin spoke about his idea for a female detective character, a concept rarely explored in Malayalam cinema. "I was working on another script at the time, and the idea of a female detective came to me. Such an idea has been rarely explored in Malayalam cinema," he shared with Cue Studio.
This dual inspiration – the conflicts between neighbours and the introduction of a strong female lead detective – culminated in the formation of Sookshmadarshini. The director noted that the merging of these ideas helped create the unique narrative that audiences are now engaging with.
MC Jithin mentioned in the interview that he has been a fan of Alfred Hitchcock’s films since his college days and has a huge admiration for works like Rear Window.
Through this thrilling blend of local storytelling and suspense, Sookshmadarshini stands out as a refreshing take on familiar themes, making it a compelling watch for a diverse audience. (With inputs from Agencies)
