‘Can you help me in dying?...’ Ram Kapoor opens up on his father's final wish on Lock Upp 2

Actor Ram Kapoor has shared one of the most personal and emotional moments of his life, revealing how he stood by his father's side after he decided to stop cancer treatment. In a deeply moving account, the actor recalled helping his father honour his final wish to die, a decision that continues to have a lasting impact on his family even years later.

Speaking about the experience, Ram said his father was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the age of 63. At the time, he underwent 18 sessions of chemotherapy and fought the disease.

However, when the cancer returned during the COVID-19 pandemic, after he had turned 73, he decided he did not want to go through treatment again.

Ram explained that his father reached out to his wife, Gautami Kapoor, asking her to arrange a conversation with him. During that discussion, his father made it clear that he had accepted his fate and no longer wanted to continue fighting the illness.

Recalling the conversation, Ram said, "I helped my father plan his death. His cancer relapsed during the COVID period. He called Gautami and told her that he wanted to talk to me. On the call, we discussed everything. And, basically, he had decided that he didn't wish to fight the disease anymore."

The actor then revealed that his father made a request that left him facing one of the most difficult decisions of his life.

"He wanted to go, but he was scared of doing it alone. He still didn't want anyone to know, but he wanted me to be there, so he point-blank asked me, 'Can you help me in dying?' He managed to convince me that if I do not help him, he will do it himself, so he didn't leave me with a choice."

Ram honoured that promise during his father's final days. He said that when his father was admitted to the ICU, there was no active treatment being carried out because that was his father's decision. Instead, he simply wanted his son by his side.

Describing those final moments, Ram shared, "When he was admitted to the ICU, I was with him, and nobody knew that there was no treatment happening. He just wanted me to hold his hand and help him go, and I had promised him that I would do it. He was scared of being alone; he wasn't scared of dying. He said he didn't want anyone to cry at his funeral."

The decision, however, came at a personal cost. Ram revealed that more than five years later, his relationship with some members of his family remains deeply affected.

"My mother and my sister still don't talk to me. It's been more than 5 years. I think it is one of the best things a child can do for his parent because everyone lives like a king, but my father fucking died like a king," he said.

The actor also said that the experience completely changed the way he looks at life and death. Witnessing his father's final journey so closely gave him a perspective he had never imagined, and helped him discover an inner strength he did not know he possessed.

"I've learnt how to live only after seeing death this close, and I'm not scared," Ram said.
