Ali G is back: Sacha Baron Cohen returns as London’s swaggering bad boy in new mockumentary

Sacha Baron Cohen is bringing back one of his most recognisable characters, Ali G, with ‘'Ali G: Who Iz I'’?, a new mockumentary from Amazon MGM. The official trailer for the film has now been released, offering a look at Ali G’s latest adventure, which takes him from London to the United States.

The story begins more than two decades after Ali G last enjoyed his former fame. After spending years living life on his own terms, he is confronted with unexpected news when he learns that his long-time girlfriend Julie, played by Morgana Robinson, is eight months pregnant. With a child on the way and new responsibilities ahead, Ali G decides it is time to make a move.

He then heads to America in an attempt to reclaim his former glory. However, his journey soon brings him face-to-face with a series of adversaries, creating situations that put both Ali G and his unborn child in danger.

Ali G was first created by Cohen in 1998 for Channel 4’s The 11 O’Clock Show. The character later received his own programme, Da Ali G Show, before making the jump to the big screen with the 2002 film Ali G Indahouse, directed by Mark Mylod.

Over the years, Cohen has become known for placing his fictional characters in real-life situations and filming the reactions that follow. He has previously used a similar approach in projects including Borat, Brüno and Who Is America?. As Ali G, Cohen has also conducted interviews with prominent public figures including Noam Chomsky, Andy Rooney and Newt Gingrich.

Like several of his previous projects, 'Ali G: Who Iz I'? was filmed secretly. Cohen first announced the project in July through a video shared on Instagram, appearing in character as Ali G.

The film also marks Cohen’s directorial debut. He serves as the writer and producer under his Four by Two Films banner, while Petr Jákl and Emily Kob are attached as executive producers.

In recent projects outside his own character-driven films, Cohen appeared as Mephisto in Marvel’s Disney+ series Ironheart. His other recent work includes Ladies First for Netflix and Balls Up for Prime Video.

'Ali G: Who Iz I'? is scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 23.
