‘Are you the one I’m looking for?’ Suresh Krishna recalls strange Mani Ratnam audition and lost role

Actor Suresh Krishna, known for his compelling performances across television and cinema, recently opened up about a missed opportunity to work with acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam.
The actor, who began his film journey with the villainous role in Karumadikuttan, has built a strong reputation over 24 years, transitioning smoothly from negative characters to comedy with remarkable ease.
In a interview with Cinema Vikatan, Suresh Krishna recalled how a role in Kutty Srank, where he starred alongside Mammootty, caught Mani Ratnam’s attention. The actor was invited to the director’s office in Chennai, where he was being considered for a role in Kadal.
“I went to the office without wanting to miss a good opportunity,” Suresh said. “When I entered the room, Mani sir stood silently, staring at me from head to toe. Then he asked, ‘Are you the person I’m looking for?’ I replied, ‘I don’t know who sir is looking for.’ He then mentioned the actor from Kutty Srank, and I told him that was me.”
The role in Kadal was said to include three distinct getups, a challenging opportunity Suresh was eager to embrace. However, the film’s script later underwent changes, and the role never materialised. “He said he would call, but the shoot didn’t start even after three months. Eventually, I found out the script had changed. Still, I have no regrets,” he added.
Suresh Krishna’s versatility and screen presence have not gone unnoticed online either. Over the years, he has gone viral across social media platforms, earning the affectionate nickname “The Convincing Star” from fans who admire how convincingly he adapts to any character—be it villainy, comedy, or supporting roles. One of his standout performances in recent times was in the cult comedy-action film Maranamass, which blended absurd humour with mass elements. The film cemented his comic timing and gained him renewed popularity among younger audiences.
Reflecting on his journey, Suresh also spoke about his role in the 2000 Tamil devotional film Pottu Amman, where he played a terrifying villain. The film, also released in Telugu as Durga, starred Roja in her 100th film and was a major milestone in Suresh’s early Tamil career.
From being eyed by Mani Ratnam to becoming an internet sensation, Suresh Krishna’s journey is a testament to the staying power of talent and transformation in Indian cinema.
