From Coldplay kiss scandal to crisis control: Astronomer joins hands with Chris Martin’s ex-wife

Days after a viral Coldplay concert moment involving former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron sparked internet frenzy, the AI startup has bounced back in spectacular fashion — by roping in actress Gwyneth Paltrow for a tongue-in-cheek promo video that’s being hailed as a “PR masterclass”.
The video, released Saturday, features Paltrow — notably the ex-wife of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin — portraying herself as a temporary spokesperson for Astronomer. “Thank you for your interest in Astronomer. I've been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300-plus employees,” she says in the clip.

Rather than addressing the scandal head-on, Paltrow deflects viral curiosity with humor, calmly answering “frequently asked questions” about the company — not the controversy. “Yes, there is still room available at our Beyond Analytics event in September,” she quips at one point, subtly nodding to the public’s fixation while steering attention back to Astronomer’s core mission: data workflow automation using Apache Airflow.
The promo begins with a computer screen flashing, “OMG! What the actual F”, before cutting to Paltrow praising Astronomer as “the best place to run Apache Airflow”. Social media users have lauded the move, calling it “the best crisis management in years” and a “textbook case of turning chaos into opportunity”.
“This might be one of the greatest cases of crisis management you’ll see in a while,” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter). “The fact that they used Chris Martin’s ex-wife for this makes it even more incredible,” added another.

Some even speculated the entire episode may have been a publicity stunt, given the strategic brilliance of the follow-up.

The original uproar began during a Coldplay concert when frontman Chris Martin pointed to a couple on the kiss cam — later identified as Andy Byron and Emily Cabot, both of whom are married to other people. As the camera zoomed in, Byron ducked and Cabot covered her face, sparking memes and online debates about infidelity and corporate image.
What followed was a social media storm. But instead of going silent or issuing apologies, Astronomer flipped the script — using star power and satire to reclaim the narrative.
And in doing so, they may have just set a new gold standard for crisis control in the digital age.
