Thiruvananthapuram: The much-anticipated Akkulam Glass Bridge in Thiruvananthapuram is all set to open for public in May. The construction work of the bridge is almost complete, and the Tourism Department is making final arrangements for the opening. Designed to offer visitors a unique visual experience, the bridge aims to enhance the tourism appeal of both the Veli Tourist Village and Akkulam region.

The bridge, which stands 70 feet tall and stretches 52 metres in length, is maintained by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC). The structure was constructed by the Vattiyoorkavu Youth Brigade Entrepreneurs Cooperative Society (VYBe), on behalf of the DTPC.

Stunning views and modern features

The bridge is equipped with advanced features to provide a better visitor experience. Artificial fog and rainfall have been installed to simulate a refreshing, immersive environment as soon as one steps onto the bridge. LED lighting and elegant decorative lights add to the scenic charm, especially during the evening hours. From the bridge, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the serene Akkulam Lake.

Much like the glass bridges in Vagamon and Wayanad, this bridge is expected to attract both adventure seekers and families alike, offering a blend of thrill and tranquillity.

Enhanced safety measures

Safety has been given top priority, particularly regarding the quality of the glass panels used on the bridge. Based on recommendations from a team of experts led by the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kozhikode, the panels were removed, reinforced with beadings, and reinstalled. Following these procedures, the NIT team conducted a detailed inspection and issued a fitness certificate for the structure.

Construction was complete almost a year ago

The construction was finished almost a year ago, and an opening date was set, but there was a delay because of a crack found in one of the glass panels. This led to concerns regarding the quality of construction materials. The contractors alleged possible conspiracy behind the damage, but subsequent investigations found no evidence to support such claims.

The VYBe officials later clarified that the quality of materials used was verified by the expert committee and found to be of reasonable standards.

DTPC officials have confirmed that all necessary precautions have been taken to ensure visitor safety and that preparations for the bridge's opening are in their final stages. While the exact date of inauguration is yet to be announced, the event is scheduled to take place within the month of May.
