Is Retinal better than Retinol? Which one is better for your skin?

Why does one skincare bottle say retinol while another says retinal? It sounds like a small difference in spelling, but the two ingredients are not quite the same.
Both belong to the retinoid family and can help improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture and pigmentation. The main difference lies in how the skin converts each ingredient into retinoic acid, the biologically active form of vitamin A that interacts with skin cells.
So, is retinal simply a stronger version of retinol? Not exactly. Here's what you need to know before deciding which one deserves a place in your skincare routine.
What exactly are retinoids?
Retinoids are a family of vitamin A derivatives used in skincare and dermatology. They include prescription ingredients such as tretinoin as well as cosmetic ingredients such as retinol and retinaldehyde.
Tretinoin is already in the active retinoic acid form, while retinol and retinal need to be converted by the skin before becoming retinoic acid. Retinol requires two conversion steps: first to retinaldehyde and then to retinoic acid. Retinal requires just one.
That difference is important, but it doesn't mean retinal will automatically work better for everyone.
Retinol vs retinal: what's the difference?
Retinol is converted into retinaldehyde and then retinoic acid. Because it needs two steps, it is generally considered less potent than retinaldehyde.
Retinal, or retinaldehyde, is one step closer to retinoic acid. Research reviews suggest it has a favourable balance between effectiveness and tolerability, although the amount of clinical research available for retinal is smaller than that for retinol.
This is why retinal is often marketed as a middle ground between gentler retinol products and stronger prescription retinoids. But the concentration, formulation and stability of the actual product matter too. Retinoids can be chemically unstable, so two products containing the same ingredient may not necessarily perform identically.
What can retinol do for your skin?
Retinol has been studied for improving several visible signs of photoageing. It can help with fine lines, uneven texture and pigmentation, while supporting changes in the skin associated with photoageing.
The American Academy of Dermatology notes that retinoids can be useful for people dealing with mild acne, pigmentation irregularities and mild fine lines and wrinkles.
More recent research also supports retinol's role in improving signs of facial photoageing. A 2025 network meta-analysis of 23 randomised controlled trials involving 3,905 participants found that retinol significantly improved fine wrinkles and was among the topical treatments that showed benefits for hyperpigmentation.
What about retinal?
Retinal has attracted attention because it is closer to retinoic acid in the conversion pathway.
There is clinical evidence behind its use, although the evidence base is not as extensive as it is for retinol or prescription tretinoin. In one randomised controlled trial involving 40 women with photoaged skin, both 0.05% and 0.1% retinaldehyde creams improved skin texture and hydration after three months and were well tolerated.
Earlier research has also found retinaldehyde useful for improving wrinkles and skin roughness, with less irritation than retinoic acid in some comparisons.
That makes retinal interesting for people who want to move beyond retinol but aren't necessarily ready for a prescription retinoid.
Is retinal stronger than retinol?
In terms of the conversion pathway, yes. In terms of real-world results, it's more complicated.
Because retinal needs only one conversion step to reach retinoic acid, it is generally considered more potent than retinol. Reviews of cosmetic retinoids place activity roughly in the order of retinyl esters, retinol, retinaldehyde and then retinoic acid. Tolerance generally moves in the opposite direction.
But don't assume that switching from a particular retinol product to retinal will automatically produce dramatically faster results. Concentration, formulation, stability, application frequency and your own skin all influence how a product performs.
Which one should you choose?
If you're new to retinoids, retinol can be a sensible starting point, particularly if you have sensitive skin and want to introduce vitamin A gradually.
If you've already used retinol comfortably and want to try something potentially more potent, retinal may be worth considering.
If your main concern is significant acne, pronounced pigmentation or more advanced photoageing, it may be worth speaking to a dermatologist rather than simply moving up the cosmetic retinoid ladder. Prescription retinoids have a stronger clinical evidence base and are used for specific dermatological conditions.
How should you start?
Whichever you choose, don't treat a retinoid like an ordinary moisturiser. Start with a small amount and use it only a few nights a week. If your skin tolerates it, gradually increase the frequency. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends starting slowly and using moisturiser to help reduce irritation.
Dryness, peeling, redness and irritation can happen, particularly when you start. This is also why piling several strong active ingredients into the same routine isn't necessarily a good idea.
And don't forget sunscreen. UV exposure is one of the major drivers of photoageing, so using a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day is an important part of any routine aimed at preventing or treating visible sun damage.
Retinoids are not recommended during pregnancy. The American Academy of Dermatology advises pregnant people to avoid retinoids, including prescription retinoids and over-the-counter skincare containing retinol.
