This warm ginger and cinnamon hot chocolate could be your new period ritual

During menstruation, some women experience cramps, bloating, fatigue and changes in appetite. The best thing about a warm cup of hot chocolate is that it gives you a reason to slow down, especially on those days when period cramps, low energy and discomfort make everything feel a little harder.
Add ginger, cinnamon and a touch of vanilla to the mix, and you have a cosy drink that feels like a treat while bringing a few potentially helpful ingredients into your routine.
What makes the ingredients worth trying?

Ginger
Fresh ginger gives the drink a gentle warmth and a slightly spicy kick. Research suggests that ginger helps to ease primary dysmenorrhoea, the medical term for menstrual cramps that are not caused by an underlying condition.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon adds a sweet, woody aroma without requiring extra sugar. Some clinical research suggests it helps to reduce menstrual pain
Cacao
Unsweetened cacao gives this drink its deep chocolate flavour without relying on a heavily sweetened chocolate mix. It contains minerals, including magnesium.
Milk
Use whichever milk you prefer. Dairy milk provides protein and calcium, while fortified plant-based alternatives can provide calcium and other nutrients, depending on the product.
The recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk of your choice
- 3 fresh ginger slices
- 2–3 cinnamon sticks, or 1 teaspoon Ceylon cinnamon powder
- 3–4 whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste or pure vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cacao powder
- 1–2 tablespoons honey, to taste
How to make it
Add the milk, ginger slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves and vanilla to a small saucepan.
Warm over medium-low heat until the milk reaches a gentle simmer. Let it simmer for 5–10 minutes, avoiding a vigorous boil.
Remove the pan from the heat and strain out the ginger, cinnamon sticks and cloves. If you used cinnamon powder, some sediment may remain.
Whisk in the cacao powder and honey until smooth. A milk frother can help make the drink extra creamy.
Pour into your favourite mug and enjoy while warm.
A few ways to make it your own
Prefer a richer chocolate flavour? Add a little more cacao.
Watching your added sugar intake? Start without honey and sweeten only if needed.
Using plant-based milk? Choose an unsweetened version if you want more control over sweetness.

Want a stronger spice flavour? Let the ginger and cinnamon infuse a little longer, while keeping the heat gentle.
When should you drink it?
Enjoy it whenever you want a warm, comforting drink during your period. While no drink can make all these symptoms disappear, a warm, homemade cacao drink can be a comforting addition to your period-care routine. Ginger, in particular, has been studied for its potential to ease menstrual pain, making this recipe more than just another hot chocolate.
Remember that severe cramps, unusually heavy bleeding or pain that interferes with everyday activities deserve medical attention. A comforting drink can be part of self-care, but it should not replace an assessment or treatment when symptoms need it.
