Sharika A.K., a native of Vadakara in Kozhikode, has become the first person with cerebral palsy in India to clear the UPSC Civil Services Examination. She achieved her dream-come-true moment this year and has now entered her probationary period. Mathrubhumi English chats with her about her life experiences after clearing one of the toughest exams in India.

Q: First of all, congratulations on one of your greatest achievements in life, made around seven months ago! You are finally reaping the fruits of your hard work. Sharika, how do you feel now after receiving this appointment from railway management?

A: “Actually, I still feel excited; it’s like a dream come true. It’s a new experience, with a new atmosphere and meeting new people.”

Q: How has  the training period been so far? What changes and challenges have you faced, both personally and professionally?

A: “Professionally, this is my first job. I was a student before this, so it’s a transition period from being a student to becoming an officer. The new atmosphere, being away from home, different weather, and food habits—all these are new changes. I have been here for two weeks now, trying to learn new things and adjust to the circumstances. It’s fine; I can cope with the climate, even though it’s cold. Last night, it was 11 degrees. But I am adjusting.”

Q: How are you coping with these changes?

A: “My parents are with me now, so I feel supported and comfortable. They are allowed to stay with me for the time being. Since I can’t manage everything by myself yet, I need their help.”

Q: How do you balance your personal and professional life?

A: “Currently, I am in my probationary period. It’s not fully professional yet—I am still learning. We have classes now, and my schedule is from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. It feels like college but with added responsibilities. So far, I am able to balance it well.”

Q: Apart from this appointment order, what is that one thing you found rewarding? Perhaps an appreciation from a special or renowned person?

A: “I received recognition after clearing the UPSC exam. Recently, I was awarded the title of Best State Role Model with Disability. I feel like I am at the peak of my life. Earlier, I was in a struggling phase, but I got immense support from my family and friends. When talking about appreciation, I was honored during a felicitation program by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and received the Phoenix award from Kairali TV, which was awarded by actor Mammootty.”

Q: How do you feel about being a role model or an inspiration for many differently-abled people?

A: “I still don’t feel that I’ve grown to the level of being a role model, but I do believe I inspire many who are marginalised in society. Differently-abled people face numerous challenges to come to the forefront. I’m happy that I can inspire them, and I consider that as an achievement. When people say, ‘You are my inspiration,’ or when I bring hope to them that they too can achieve their dreams, it makes me feel genuinely happy and rewarded.”

Q: What inspired you to choose this path?

A: “This was not my childhood dream; it popped into my mind accidentally. I’ve always loved to do social service. While discussing this with my friends and teachers, they encouraged me to pursue UPSC. Initially, I didn’t take it seriously because it is one of the toughest exams. However, after completing my degree, I read the book “Collector: Ini Njian Thallate”written by former Kozhikode Collector Prasanth Nair. Through his stories, I learned about the vast opportunities and the services one can do as an IAS officer for society. That inspired me to choose this path. At first, I thought of it as just an attempt, but eventually, I cleared the exam on my second attempt.”

Q: What are your future plans?

A: “My probation period is for two years, and I am currently attending the foundation course, which is happening in Lucknow. As of now, no updates have been given about the schedules after this course. I am not sure about my posting, whether it will be in Kerala or elsewhere.”
