The early arrival of the monsoon has severely affected cardamom cultivation in Kerala’s Idukki district, dashing the hopes of thousands of farmers who had just begun recovering from the effects of last year’s intense summer. The rainfall over the past week has caused widespread damage to the crop, dealing a heavy blow to the agrarian community in the region.

How severe is the crop loss?

Preliminary estimates indicate that cardamom plantations spread across 337 hectares—owned by 2,556 farmers—have suffered extensive destruction due to incessant rain. The reported loss so far amounts to Rs 235 lakh.

Is the actual loss likely to be higher?

The figure is based only on reports submitted to agricultural offices until June 7. Officials say that “hundreds of cardamom farmers are yet to apply” for damage assessment. As more farmers come forward, the total financial loss is expected to rise.

What is the government’s response?

Spices Board Chairperson Sangeetha Viswanathan visited several panchayats in Idukki to assess the ground situation. She assured that “schemes will be formulated and implemented to provide relief to the farmers suffering from the monsoon damage."
