Kerala set to include newspaper reading as an academic activity in schools

Thiruvananthapuram: In a bid to promote reading habits among students, 'Newspaper Reading' will be added as part of academic activities in schools. The idea has been included in a draft prepared by the government, intending to boost reading habits among students. A detailed plan of action pertaining to this will soon be handed over to the government by SCERT-KERALA (State Council of Educational Research and Training).
As part of the initiative, newspapers will be made available in all classrooms. 'Newspaper Reading' will also be integrated into the continuous evaluation process. Analytical and explanatory questions related to contemporary issues will be asked in public exams to foster reading habits.
Earlier, Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty had hinted at allotting grace marks to students for engaging in 'newspaper reading'.
Newspaper reading activities planned
- On days without assembly, there will be a scheduled time for newspaper reading before classes start
- During the weekly activity (creative) period, major news items of the week will be presented.
- In Upper Primary and High School, news items will be discussed once a week
- School radio for news reading
- Prepare a newspaper individually at the school level.
- Assess the news acumen progress with exams, quizzes, and worksheets
- Competitions from sub-district to state level
