Premium hatchbacks reclaim top spots among best-selling cars in December 2025

The Indian automotive industry closed the 2025 calendar year with a surprising twist in the leaderboards. While SUVs dominated the headlines for most of the year, the final month belonged to the premium hatchback segment. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno emerged as the highest-selling car in India for December 2025, recording a massive 143% year-on-year (YoY) growth.
Analysts note that the shift was largely driven by the GST 2.0 rationalisation implemented in late 2025, which significantly lowered the price floor for sub-4-meter compacts, alongside aggressive year-end inventory clearances.

The Drivers of Growth
1. The Baleno Resurgence
After failing to crack the top 10 in November, the Baleno’s December performance was fueled by a significant price reduction of up to ₹86,100 following new tax incentives. Its value proposition, offering a 360-degree camera and 6 airbags at a sub-₹6 lakh entry price (ex-showroom), reignited interest in premium hatchbacks among urban buyers.
2. SUV Fatigue or Strategic Buying?
The Maruti Fronx narrowly missed the top spot but confirmed its status as the year’s breakout crossover. Meanwhile, the Tata Nexon, despite being dethroned from its No.1 rank in November, maintained a strong YoY growth of 43%. This suggests that while SUVs remain the aspirational choice, the "price-to-feature" ratio of hatchbacks became too attractive to ignore during the December sales window.
3. The Dzire's Annual Crown
While it finished 4th in December, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire officially became the best-selling car of the full calendar year 2025, with cumulative sales of 2.14 lakh units. It successfully held off the Hyundai Creta and Tata Nexon to reclaim the title Maruti last held in 2023.
The Road Ahead: Q1 2026
The market is bracing for a high-voltage January. Tata Motors is set to launch the Punch Facelift this week (January 13), aimed at reclaiming the micro-SUV crown. Furthermore, Mahindra also refreshed the 7XO (formerly XUV700) to counter the growing influence of the newly launched Maruti Suzuki Victoris in the premium SUV space.
