As anticipation mounts for Rockstar Games’ next Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) trailer, YouTube has quietly revised its content moderation policies to impose tighter restrictions on videos containing violent gameplay. The move has unsettled many gaming creators who now fear losing ad revenue just as global excitement around the upcoming release grows.

YouTube gets tough on violent gaming footage

Recent reports indicate that YouTube has begun enforcing stricter measures against gaming videos portraying intense or realistic violence. Gameplay clips depicting harm to civilians, scenes of torture, or sexualised violence could now face age restrictions, limited monetisation, or exclusion from recommendations. These elements—commonly seen in popular open-world titles like Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption 2—are now being scrutinised more closely than before.

Several creators have reported that older videos, once compliant with YouTube’s standards, are now being flagged for violations. Clips from games such as Call of Duty, Cyberpunk 2077, and Red Dead Redemption 2 have been retroactively demonetised or removed from visibility. Some creators say they have received policy warnings without clear explanations.

The timing of the new enforcement appears strategic, aligning with the expected release of GTA 6 Trailer 3. The platform seems to be bracing for an influx of content likely to feature graphic or controversial material. While YouTube has not issued an official statement, reports suggest that the stricter rules aim to avoid backlash from advertisers and viewers as violent game content trends surge alongside the trailer’s debut.

Under the revised policy, videos containing “gratuitous violence” may be subject to limited ad revenue or reduced visibility in recommendations. This poses challenges for creators who depend on trending titles like GTA 6 to drive traffic and income.

Stricter rules for digital and NFT-based gambling on YouTube

YouTube’s latest policy revision has also extended its restrictions to cover gambling-related content. The update now includes digital-based gambling activities involving NFTs, in-game skins, and cosmetic rewards, not just wagers with real money. Any videos directing viewers to unauthorised gambling websites or apps continue to violate YouTube’s rules and may face removal or penalties.

Virtual casino content faces new age limits on YouTube

YouTube has also redefined its treatment of casino-style gaming videos that simulate gambling without using actual currency. Such content will now carry an age restriction, making it inaccessible to users below 18 years old.
