OPPO has officially introduced ColorOS 17, the latest version of its Android-based operating system, bringing major improvements in system performance, artificial intelligence, visual design and privacy protection. The new software will debut on the upcoming OPPO Find X10 Series before gradually expanding to other compatible devices.

Unveiled on October 13, ColorOS 17 introduces a redesigned interface, more advanced AI-powered tools and improved resource management aimed at delivering a smoother smartphone experience.

The update also brings new security features, including AI-powered fraud detection during phone calls and enhanced encryption for cloud-based AI services.

ColorOS 17 introduces Living Flow Design

One of the biggest changes in ColorOS 17 is the introduction of Living Flow Design, a new interface approach focused on making animations and everyday interactions more natural.

The design builds on the animation improvements introduced in ColorOS 15 and ColorOS 16, incorporating three major elements: Luminous Effect, Fluid Motion and Flexible Feedback.

Luminous Effect introduces softer, translucent visuals with subtle lighting effects that respond to user interactions. Fluid Motion allows interface elements to move and transform smoothly between different states, while Flexible Feedback makes buttons and toolbars visually react to touch through stretching, compression and rebound animations.

According to OPPO, these improvements are intended to make app transitions, notifications and other system interactions feel more responsive.

Faster app launches and improved multitasking

Beyond visual changes, ColorOS 17 introduces a Unified Rendering Architecture powered by an upgraded Luminous Rendering Engine.

The system combines previously separate rendering processes into a single pipeline, reducing unnecessary processing operations while improving animation consistency.

OPPO claims the new architecture can reduce rendering workloads by up to 30 per cent and RAM consumption associated with rendering by up to 25 per cent compared with the previous generation.

The company has also upgraded its Laminar Flow Engine, which manages system resources and coordinates background and foreground tasks.

According to OPPO’s internal performance figures, ColorOS 17 delivers a 55 per cent improvement in app launch stability, while Gallery thumbnails can load up to 50 per cent faster during the first launch compared with ColorOS 16.

The operating system can also keep more than 25 per cent additional applications running in the background, potentially improving multitasking and reducing the need to reload apps.

OPPO further claims that ColorOS 17 can retain more than 90 per cent of its original smoothness after simulated usage equivalent to six years, even when device storage reaches 90 per cent capacity.

These performance figures are based on company testing and may vary depending on the device and usage conditions.

AI Mind Pilot can organise files and complete tasks

Artificial intelligence is a major focus of ColorOS 17, with OPPO introducing new system-level capabilities designed to perform tasks rather than simply respond to questions.

The upgraded AI Mind Pilot includes an Agent Mode that can access photos and files stored on the device, search across multiple sources and coordinate several actions based on user instructions.

For example, users can ask the AI assistant to locate scattered documents, organise files into categories or rename them according to their content and creation dates.

The feature can also use information from saved documents to generate travel itineraries or webpages.

For photo management, AI Mind Pilot can identify pictures from a particular trip, arrange them into albums and create content such as vlog covers.

The company says these capabilities are intended to reduce the need for users to manually navigate multiple apps when completing complex tasks.

AI Photo Agent brings natural language editing

ColorOS 17 also introduces AI Photo Agent, an image-editing assistant that allows users to modify photographs using simple text instructions.

A new Style Match feature enables users to upload a reference photograph and apply a similar colour palette, lighting tone and overall visual style to another image.

Users can also describe the changes they want, allowing the AI to make adjustments without requiring manual editing.

Alternatively, AI Photo Agent can analyse a photograph and recommend improvements based on the subject and surrounding environment.

OPPO says the feature is designed to preserve the natural appearance of photographs while simplifying the editing process.

AI Mind Space gets smarter memory management

OPPO has expanded AI Mind Space, its personal information management feature, to support additional types of saved content.

Users can now store documents and video links, with AI analysing the information and converting it into searchable records.

A new Memory Collections feature automatically groups related information and creates summaries, making it easier to retrieve previously saved content.

For travellers, AI Mind Space can combine stored information with destination maps to generate personalised travel plans based on saved locations, recommendations and other details.

Another addition, AI Mind Suggest, provides contextual recommendations and reminders throughout the day.

The feature can display morning briefings, travel notifications and flight or train information when relevant. It can also suggest music when headphones are connected.

OSee combines multiple visual AI tools

ColorOS 17 introduces OSee, a unified visual AI feature that allows users to access several services through the smartphone camera.

By pressing the camera shutter, users can activate AI-powered recognition of objects and scenes.

Depending on the subject, OSee can provide object identification, information searches, nutritional analysis, document scanning and translation.

The feature is designed to eliminate the need to switch between separate applications for different camera-based AI tasks.

New AI Call Guard aims to detect voice and video scams

Security is another major area of improvement in ColorOS 17.

The update introduces AI Call Guard, a feature that uses on-device artificial intelligence to monitor phone calls for potential fraud.

According to OPPO, the system can identify suspicious activity involving AI-generated voices and face-swapping technology, alerting users when potential threats are detected.

The feature is aimed at addressing the growing use of deepfake technology in financial scams and impersonation attempts.

OPPO has also strengthened its Private Computing Cloud, which handles cloud-based AI processing.

The company says the system uses end-to-end encryption and processes information within a protected environment designed to prevent unauthorised access, including by OPPO itself.

ColorOS 17 adds post-quantum security capabilities and a dual-encryption mechanism intended to protect information transmitted between smartphones and cloud services against emerging cybersecurity threats.

Users can monitor how AI processes their data

The new operating system also introduces a Transparency Report feature that provides information about how AI services use personal data.

Users can check which AI services have been accessed, when they were used and what operations were performed.

The report can be viewed directly on the smartphone and exported when required.

According to OPPO, the feature is intended to give users greater visibility and control over AI-related data processing.

ColorOS 17 rollout: Which OPPO phones will receive the update?

OPPO has confirmed that ColorOS 17 will make its debut with the upcoming Find X10 Series.

The company plans to roll out the update progressively to additional OPPO smartphones.

However, a detailed list of eligible devices, region-wise rollout dates and the availability of individual AI features has not been announced in the information released so far.

Some features may also depend on device hardware, software compatibility and regional availability.

With ColorOS 17, OPPO is placing greater emphasis on autonomous AI capabilities, smoother long-term performance and stronger privacy controls as smartphone manufacturers increasingly integrate artificial intelligence into everyday device operations.
