Is OnePlus shutting down? Internet search surge fuels fears over brand’s future

OnePlus is dominating search trends across India—not for a product launch, but amid growing fears of a shutdown or merger. Queries such as "OnePlus dismantled" have surged as online speculation questions the brand’s future within the BBK Electronics ecosystem.
Why “shutdown” is trending
The viral chatter follows reports suggesting OnePlus is losing strategic priority within BBK Electronics, which also controls Oppo, Vivo and Realme. Observers point to an unusually thin product roadmap, with several upcoming devices—including next-generation foldables—reportedly delayed or cancelled.
Industry analysts say the brand may be undergoing a "strategic realignment" to cut costs during a global slowdown in smartphone sales. This could mean a deeper merger with Oppo or a pullback from certain international markets where marketing visibility has already weakened.
Is OnePlus really disappearing?
Despite the intensity of online speculation, there is no official confirmation of a shutdown. OnePlus continues to roll out software updates and security patches, a move considered unlikely if a full exit were imminent.
For existing users, warranties remain valid and devices continue to receive support. The company has weathered similar doubts in the past, including during its earlier software integration with Oppo.
CEO Pete Lau faces arrest warrant
Adding to the uncertainty is a significant legal crisis involving OnePlus CEO Pete Lau. Taiwanese prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant, accusing Lau of operating a "clandestine" recruitment scheme.
Authorities allege he used a secret Hong Kong shell company to bypass regulations and recruit more than 70 Taiwanese engineers over the past decade. Prosecutors claim OnePlus opened an unapproved branch in 2015 to test smartphone software, violating the Cross-Strait Act.
The case forms part of a broader crackdown on talent poaching. Taiwan has recently investigated 16 Chinese firms for targeting high-tech workers and, in 2025, issued a similar warrant for Luxshare Precision chair Grace Wang. Lau has not commented, while the company says business continues as usual.
