Mercedes-Benz has announced a recall for a limited number of its CLE, AMG CLE and AMG C-Class models after identifying a software malfunction that could prevent the Emergency Stop Assist feature from activating. The defect affects the system responsible for detecting when a driver stops steering or removes their hands from the wheel during an emergency.

Internal testing flagged that the hands-off detection logic may fail under certain conditions, raising concerns that the automatic braking and emergency call functions might not operate as designed.

Emergency stop assist may fail to activate

According to the company, the flaw could compromise safety if a driver becomes unresponsive while using assisted-driving functions. Normally, the system should detect the absence of steering input, bring the vehicle to a controlled stop and automatically contact emergency services.

In its official statement, the manufacturer said, "In the process, it has been determined that the assistive feature of Emergency Stop Assist might not be available. In the event the system detects that the driver has not steered the vehicle for a considerable period of time or has removed their hands from the steering wheel due to some medical emergency of the driver, the assistive feature of automated emergency stop might therefore not be initiated as intended. As a result, the associated automatic emergency call may not be initiated."

Models and units affected

The recall applies to:

  • Select 2024–2025 CLE models
  • Specific AMG CLE vehicles produced between 2024 and 2025
  • AMG C-Class variants manufactured from October 2024 to November 2024

A total of 149 units are affected.

Dealers are expected to update the software to restore full Emergency Stop Assist functionality. Owners will be contacted by the brand with further instructions.
