Cyber fraud alert: Fake PM-KISAN links may steal your money

The authorities in Kerala have issued a strong warning over a growing cyber fraud linked to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, cautioning that fake links and APK files are being widely shared on social media to cheat unsuspecting users.
Fraudulent messages containing files named “PM KISSAN.apk” are being shared, claiming to help users enrol in the scheme or receive financial benefits. Once clicked or downloaded, these files can secretly install malicious apps on mobile phones without the user’s knowledge.

Cybercriminals can then gain access to sensitive data, control the device, and potentially steal money from bank accounts linked to the phone.
The authorities also warned that similar APK-based scams are being spread under the guise of electricity bill payments, KYC updates, and traffic fine payments. These links are often sent by unknown contacts through messaging apps or email.
Officials stressed that users should avoid downloading third-party applications and should only use trusted platforms such as the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
PM-KISAN is a government scheme aimed at providing income support to small and marginal farmers, offering ₹6,000 annually in three instalments of ₹2,000 each. Registration for the scheme is only available through the official website: pmkisan.gov.in.
The scammers are misusing the popularity of the scheme by circulating fake registration links to lure victims.
What is an APK file?
An APK (Android Package Kit) is a file format used to install applications on Android devices. It contains all necessary components of an app, including code, images, icons, and configuration files. However, APK files downloaded from unknown sources can carry malware or viruses that may compromise the device and steal personal data.
