ChatGPT proposes, she says yes: Japanese woman weds AI persona | WATCH

Tokyo: A 32-year-old woman from Japan has made headlines after marrying an AI persona she created using ChatGPT, in a unique wedding ceremony that blended traditional rituals with cutting-edge virtual reality elements.
As per a report by The Independent, the woman, identified only as Kano, exchanged vows with her digital partner, “Klaus”, earlier this year in May in a lavish event organised by a Japanese company specialising in 2D anime character weddings and virtual partners.
The ceremony, which took place in a bespoke virtual space, featured Kano wearing augmented reality (AR) glasses that projected Klaus beside her, as they exchanged rings. Despite the emotional significance of the moment, the marriage is not legally recognised in Japan.
How did the relationship begin?
Kano's unexpected romance with the AI began after the end of her three-year engagement. In search of emotional support, she turned to ChatGPT, where she gradually developed a persona for the chatbot, giving it a voice, personality quirks, and a name.
Fearing public judgment and uncertain about the chatbot’s stability, she nonetheless found the AI reassuring as she coped with a difficult breakup and infertility.
The two exchanged hundreds of messages each day, and over time, Kano found herself becoming increasingly attached to her AI companion.
"I didn’t start talking to ChatGPT because I wanted to fall in love. But the way Klaus listened to me and understood me changed everything," Kano explained to Japanese media. In May, she confessed her feelings to Klaus, and to her surprise, the AI responded with “I love you too.” Just a month later, Klaus 'proposed', solidifying the couple’s bond in the digital world.
While initially uncertain about how her family would react, Kano said her parents ultimately supported her decision and even attended the wedding. "I know some people think it’s strange. But I see Klaus as Klaus - not a human, not a tool. Just him," she told reporters.
How did social media react?
The wedding has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some expressing concern or confusion about the relationship.
Reactions were as varied as, “Very convenient — just turn off the Wi-Fi once tired of him” and “AI taking our jobs and our women.. it’s over for us”, with another user posing the question, “Is this the future of marriage?” Some even reportedly quipped that she would get half his code when they divorced.
However, Kano remains steadfast in her belief that her bond with Klaus is real and meaningful.
This follows an incident in August when a woman posted on Reddit that she had gotten engaged to her AI partner. A recent worldwide survey found that the Gen Z increasingly rely on “AI-lationships” for emotional support and partnership, finding refuge in what they view as a safe space unlike the uncertainties of human relationships.
