Is X down? Users in India and US report widespread outage

X appeared to face a major outage on Tuesday evening, with hundreds of users in India reporting difficulties accessing both the mobile app and website. Outage tracking platform Downdetector showed a sharp spike in complaints beginning around 7.43 pm IST.
According to Downdetector data, more than 2,000 users in India reported X issues during the peak of the disruption. Of these, 46 per cent said they were unable to access the website, while 41 per cent faced problems using the mobile application. Another 13 per cent reported server connection-related issues.
The outage was concentrated in several major Indian cities, including Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Indore, Chandigarh, Kolkata and Mumbai, suggesting a widespread disruption rather than a localised issue.
At the same time, a significant number of users in the United States also reported problems. Downdetector recorded over 20,000 complaints across the US, indicating that the disruption may not have been limited to India alone.
In the US, 59 per cent of affected users reported issues with the mobile app, 25 per cent experienced problems accessing the website, and 16 per cent flagged disruptions related to the feed or timeline. Cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta and Chicago were among the worst affected, according to the outage map.
As of the time of reporting, X had not issued an official statement clarifying the cause of the disruption or confirming whether the outage was global. Similar outages in the past have been linked to server issues, software updates or internal system failures.
The incident once again highlights the platform’s vulnerability to service interruptions, particularly during periods of heavy user activity, and adds to growing scrutiny over reliability since X’s rebranding and operational changes.
