Is Elon Musk’s XChat about to replace WhatsApp?

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has taken another step toward becoming an all-in-one application with the launch of XChat, a dedicated messaging service.
The move positions X to directly compete with established platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram and China’s WeChat.
Focus on security and versatility
In an official post on X, Musk revealed that XChat includes several key features such as encryption similar to that used in Bitcoin, disappearing messages, and cross-platform audio and video calling. Users will also be able to share different types of files with other XChat users.
“All new XChat is rolling out with encryption, vanishing messages and the ability to send any kind of file. Also, audio/video calling,” Musk announced.
Built for speed and safety
XChat is developed using Rust, a programming language known for its focus on speed and security. This allows the app to provide robust end-to-end encryption, putting it on par with platforms like WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram in terms of secure messaging.
Availability and access
Currently, XChat is in its beta stage and is only accessible to select users and developers. Additionally, access is limited to paid subscribers of X. It remains to be seen whether the service will be made available to free users in the future, possibly with a limited feature set.
Future prospects
It is also unclear whether Musk’s AI chatbot Grok will be integrated into the messaging platform, similar to Meta’s AI integration in WhatsApp and Messenger. Based on Musk’s announcement, XChat is expected to be available across Android, iOS and web platforms.
