iPhone 18 Pro Max vs Galaxy S26 Ultra: How do Apple and Samsung’s top flagships compare?

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra are going head-to-head at the top end of the smartphone market, with both companies packing their latest flagships with upgraded cameras, large displays, powerful processors and AI features.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 for the 256GB model, making it $100 more expensive than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Its price now puts it almost on par with Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra, which starts at $1,300.
Apple has attributed the higher pricing across its iPhone lineup to market factors including the ongoing RAM shortage. Despite the increase, the iPhone 18 Pro Max remains a direct competitor to Samsung’s flagship, particularly in camera and battery performance.

Design and display
The two phones take different approaches to design despite their similarly large form factors.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max retains the aluminium unibody design introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro Max and is available in burgundy red, glacier blue, silver and black. Weighing 249 grams, it features a 6.8-inch OLED display.
Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra is slightly larger, with a 6.9-inch AMOLED display, but is considerably lighter at 214 grams. It is available in pink gold, silver shadow, cobalt violet, sky blue, white and black.
One of Samsung’s standout features is its Privacy Display, which makes selected apps and notifications harder to view from an angle. The feature allows users to protect on-screen information without using a separate privacy screen protector.
Battery and charging
Both flagships feature large batteries, although Apple does not officially disclose the battery capacity of US models.

Apple’s Ireland website lists a 5,391-mAh battery for the physical SIM version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. That is slightly larger than the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s 5,000-mAh battery. The US eSIM version could potentially have a higher capacity.
Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max can deliver up to 45 hours of video playback, but it has not yet disclosed its charging speed.
Samsung, meanwhile, gives the Galaxy S26 Ultra a clear advantage on charging specifications, with support for 60W wired charging. In CNET testing, the phone reached 76% from zero in 30 minutes.
Apple’s previous-generation iPhone 17 Pro Max supported 40W charging and reached 69% in the same 30-minute test. The iPhone 18 Pro Max will need to be tested to determine how its charging performance compares.
Camera battle
Camera hardware is another major battleground between the two phones.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max introduces a variable-aperture camera, allowing the lens to physically open or close depending on lighting conditions. Its triple-camera system consists of a 49-megapixel wide camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 48-megapixel telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom.
Samsung takes a different approach with a four-camera setup. The Galaxy S26 Ultra features a 200-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera, a 50-megapixel telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.
While Samsung offers more cameras and higher headline megapixel counts, Apple’s variable-aperture system is one of the key new additions to the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Performance and AI
Apple’s A20 Pro chip powers the iPhone 18 Pro Max and its latest AI capabilities, including a new Siri AI assistant developed through Apple’s collaboration with Google’s Gemini.
The upgraded Siri can search information contained in emails and text messages and turn that information into actions such as reminders or calendar events.
Apple is also highlighting the A20 Pro’s gaming performance, with a vapor chamber designed to help control temperatures during demanding workloads.
Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 for Galaxy processor. Its Galaxy AI features focus on areas including proactive suggestions and photo editing, while the hardware is also designed for high-end gaming.
iPhone 18 Pro Max vs Galaxy S26 Ultra: Which one stands out?
The two flagships take different approaches to the premium smartphone experience. The iPhone 18 Pro Max brings Apple’s latest A20 Pro chip, a new variable-aperture camera and a battery that is reported to be larger than Samsung’s, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra counters with a lighter design, a larger display, faster wired charging, four rear cameras and its distinctive Privacy Display.
With both phones priced at around $1,300, the choice increasingly comes down to which ecosystem, camera approach, AI features and hardware strengths matter most to the buyer.
