iOS 26 launches today: Here’s what’s new and which iPhones get it

Apple will officially roll out iOS 26 today (September 15), and it's one of the most visually striking and feature-packed updates in recent memory. The update brings a bold new design, smarter AI tools, major upgrades to core apps like Messages and Phone, and new compatibility requirements that mark the end of the line for some older iPhones.
Whether you're upgrading today or planning to explore the new features later, here’s everything you need to know about iOS 26.
Liquid Glass Design
The first thing you’ll notice is Liquid Glass, Apple’s brand-new design language for iOS. It introduces a glossy, translucent aesthetic with smooth animations and layered depth that flow beautifully across the lock screen, widgets, system apps, and notifications.
This visual refresh makes your iPhone feel more dynamic and immersive: it’s sleek, modern, and distinctly Apple.
Smarter with Apple Intelligence
iOS 26 also introduces Apple Intelligence, a new suite of AI-powered tools that make your phone more helpful than ever.
- Get intelligent summaries of messages and notifications
- Use context-aware actions that adapt to what you're doing
- Enjoy real-time translations built right into your apps
Note: These advanced AI features require newer hardware and are only available on:
iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max
All iPhone 16 models
The new iPhone 16e
Big Upgrades to Messages and Phone
iOS 26 brings serious improvements to how you communicate:
In Messages:
- Customise chat backgrounds and apply themes to individual conversations
- Create in-chat polls
- View typing indicators in group chats
- Use Apple Cash directly in Messages for quick, seamless payments
In Phone:
- Call Screening automatically filters out spam and unknown callers using on-device AI
- Hold Assist stays on the line during long hold times and alerts you when a human rep is available
Other App Enhancements
- Apple Music: Smarter playlists, better navigation
- ️ Maps: Simplified location sharing and smoother route planning
- Camera: Adaptive new interface for faster, easier photo-taking
- Games App: A new hub for Apple Arcade and Game Center, putting your favourite titles and achievements in one place
iPhone compatibility: Who gets iOS 26?
iOS 26 is available for the following devices:
iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
iPhone 12, 13, 14, and 15 series
iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, and 16e
iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation)
Devices that will NOT get iOS 26:
