Elon Musk’s AI Grok is hiring ‘Video Game Tutors’: Here’s what you need to know

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, is broadening the scope of its chatbot Grok by recruiting humans to train it in video game creation. The company has posted job openings for “Video Game Tutors,” inviting professionals to guide Grok in areas such as game mechanics, storytelling, design, and player experience. The initiative aims to push the chatbot beyond traditional text interactions, enabling it to develop interactive and playable games.
The role involves offering structured feedback, curating content, and labelling data to strengthen Grok’s understanding of how games function. Tutors will also assess and refine Grok’s attempts at game development, ensuring that the AI produces content that is engaging, functional, and enjoyable for players. Human creativity and expertise are expected to play a key role in shaping Grok’s capabilities in narrative and gameplay design.
Job responsibilities
Successful candidates will use xAI’s proprietary software to annotate projects and provide insights into storylines, mechanics, and design elements. They will work closely with technical teams to improve training tools and workflows while evaluating Grok’s game outputs on creativity, functionality, and player engagement.
Skills and experience required
Applicants are expected to demonstrate expertise in game design, computer science, or interactive media, ideally with experience in indie game development. A strong portfolio, solid judgement of video game quality, and the ability to rigorously test AI-generated games are key.
Candidates should also be well-versed in analysing gaming trends, using development tools, and applying iterative improvement methods. Strong communication and creativity are essential, alongside a deep familiarity with video games, whether through professional or personal experience. Prior work in AI-assisted game development or playtesting is also considered beneficial.
Location, setup and pay
The roles are available either at xAI’s office in Palo Alto, California, or remotely. In-office staff will be required to work five days a week, while remote workers must be highly self-motivated. Training schedules run from 9 am to 5.30 pm PST for two weeks before shifting to the employee’s local timezone.
Applicants must own a compatible device—either a Chromebook, a Mac running macOS 11.0 or later, or a Windows 10 (or newer) PC—and have reliable smartphone access. Visa sponsorship is not available, and xAI is unable to hire candidates based in Wyoming or Illinois.
Pay ranges from $45 to $100 per hour, with full-time staff potentially eligible for medical benefits depending on their country of residence. Part-time roles do not include benefits.
Restrictions and conditions
As part of the application, candidates must confirm that they will not work with xAI while engaged with certain other companies. The list includes major players such as OpenAI, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, Anthropic, Stability.ai, Character.ai, and several others. Applicants must explicitly acknowledge these restrictions during the hiring process.
