New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has announced plans to introduce AI-driven eKYC and global credential verification features on the DigiLocker platform, further strengthening its role in India’s digital governance ecosystem.

According to an official statement, DigiLocker has evolved from a secure document repository into a national trust layer that connects citizens with government ministries, departments, and institutions.

The announcement came during the National Conference on DigiLocker, organised by the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under MeitY, to showcase the platform’s expanding role in promoting paperless governance, inclusive education, and secure digital services.

“DigiLocker serves as the trust layer connecting citizens, ministries, and departments, enabling secure, interoperable, and accountable digital governance. Our vision is a future where every digital interaction is trusted, every citizen empowered, and every institution accountable,” said S Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, who chaired the conference.

Krishnan noted that DigiLocker represents the next step in India’s digital transformation, moving from connectivity to capability, service delivery to self-reliance, and now towards trust-based digitalisation.

Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary at MeitY, outlined the upcoming features, including AI-enabled eKYC and global credential verification, positioning DigiLocker as a global model for paperless governance.

Presentations during the conference highlighted DigiLocker’s integration with Pension and Treasury systems in Maharashtra and with over 500 citizen services through the Sewa Setu Portal in Assam.

Seven states, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Mizoram, were recognised as “DigiLocker Accelerators” for their leadership and innovation in implementing the platform.

DigiLocker currently enables citizens to securely access, verify, and share their IDs, financial records, and certificates, reducing paperwork and ensuring efficient, authenticated digital transactions.
