A Bengaluru-based bike rider’s viral video has caught the attention of social media users after he claimed to earn between Rs 80,000 and Rs 85,000 a month through ride-hailing services. The video, which was originally shared by Karnataka Portfolio on X, features the driver explaining that his earnings come from working up to 13 hours a day with platforms like Uber and Rapido.
In the clip, a conversation unfolds between the driver and an individual who reacts in surprise, saying, "Even we don’t earn that much.”
The rise of bike taxis in India has been fueled by the growing demand for affordable and quick transportation, particularly in urban areas like Bengaluru. This trend has made bike taxis a crucial service for many commuters, while offering drivers an unexpectedly lucrative source of income.
Recently, Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma also shared the video on his X profile, applauding India’s gig economy. He praised the tech-driven platforms for creating millions of jobs and contributing to the local economy. In his post, Sharma described how these platforms are shaping a digital services ecosystem that the world admires, from fast deliveries to local rides. He expressed pride in India's digital services workers and their contributions to building an inclusive and innovative Digital India, quoting the lyrics from a Hindi song, “Hum hain naye, andaaz kyu ho purana?”
While the video continues to circulate online, it has sparked a range of reactions from social media users. Some celebrated it as a testament to the power of Digital India, while others questioned the impact of such long working hours on drivers’ health and work-life balance.
Online ride-hailing services, including bike and taxi services, have emerged as key contributors to India’s urban economy, providing competitive earning opportunities for drivers and a convenient transport option for riders.
