Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max vs iPhone 16 Pro Max: The ultimate comparison

Apple is just hours away from unveiling the iPhone 17 series at its highly anticipated ‘Awe Dropping’ event on September 9, and leaks have already provided a detailed look at what’s coming. Sitting at the top of the line-up is the iPhone 17 Pro Max - the model expected to deliver the biggest leap in performance, design and camera technology since last year’s iPhone 16 Pro Max.
For anyone deciding whether to upgrade, here’s a closer look at how Apple’s new flagship stacks up against its predecessor.
Cameras
The biggest shift is in the camera system. The iPhone 16 Pro Max offered a 48-megapixel main sensor, a 48-megapixel ultrawide lens and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera. This year, Apple is reportedly moving to a triple 48-megapixel array on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, bringing high-resolution sensors to every rear lens. The move could lead to sharper zoom, more consistent image quality across focal lengths and improved low-light performance.
Support for 8K video recording is also expected, marking a first for the iPhone, while photography enthusiasts may see meaningful gains in clarity, colour accuracy and digital zoom quality.
Front camera
Apple appears to be doubling down on selfie performance. The front-facing camera is expected to jump from 12 megapixels on the iPhone 16 Pro Max to 24 megapixels on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The higher resolution should provide crisper selfies, improved low-light performance and better digital crop options for video calls without sacrificing image quality.
Battery
Battery life is another area of improvement. The iPhone 16 Pro Max carried a battery just under 4,700 mAh, but the iPhone 17 Pro Max is tipped to feature Apple’s largest battery yet, roughly 5,000 mAh. The slightly thicker body, at about 8.75 mm compared with 8.25 mm last year, would help accommodate the bigger cell, potentially giving users two days of use between charges, especially for gaming, streaming and heavy workloads.
Performance
Inside, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to move from the A18 Pro chip to the new A19 Pro processor, built on a 3-nanometre process for improved efficiency and power. RAM is also reportedly increasing from 8GB to 12GB, paving the way for smoother multitasking, faster app switching and better graphics performance for high-end mobile games and professional apps.
Design changes
Apple is said to be refreshing the look of its Pro Max line. Instead of last year’s titanium build, the iPhone 17 Pro Max may use a glass-aluminium frame. The camera island is also rumoured to switch from a square to a rectangular layout, giving the device a subtly different silhouette while keeping it recognisably an iPhone.
New colours
The company is also expected to expand its colour palette, with leaks pointing to a bold “fiery orange” and a new shade of blue alongside the usual black, white and grey finishes, offering users more personalisation options.
Dynamic Island update
Another subtle change could come to the Dynamic Island. Reports suggest Apple will reduce its size on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, freeing up more screen area for apps and media while maintaining the feature’s signature functionality.
The Pro Max is expected to debut at around ₹1,64,990, with the base model likely offering 256GB of storage. Taken together, these changes represent one of the most comprehensive updates in years, with meaningful upgrades in cameras, performance, battery life and design. But with a higher expected price tag, Apple may have to convince buyers that the jump from the iPhone 16 Pro Max to the iPhone 17 Pro Max is worth the cost, and that it’s more than just an incremental upgrade.
