New York: Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams made a valiant effort in her return to the US Open but was ultimately defeated in the first round by Czech player Karolina Muchova in a three-set battle on Monday night. At 45 years old, Williams’s appearance marked her record 25th participation in the tournament.

The match, held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, saw Williams fight fiercely despite a slow start, eventually levelling the match by winning the second set after dropping the first 6-3. However, Muchova, seeded 11th and a recent US Open semi-finalist, regained control to win the final set 6-1, closing the match in about two hours with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 scoreline.

Williams, making her first Grand Slam appearance in two years following surgery and a lengthy break, received an outpour of support from the crowd, who cheered her on enthusiastically throughout the match. The American showcased flashes of her trademark power and precision, especially in the second set, where she matched Muchova point for point.

Despite the loss, Williams expressed pride in her performance and gratitude for the support from fans and the tennis community. She is still considering her future in the sport after recently returning to competition.

Muchova praised Williams for her legendary status and competitive spirit, calling it an honour to face such an iconic player.
