Indian boxing legend Mary Kom has broken her silence on the social media backlash triggered by remarks she made about her former husband, K Onler Kom, during a recent talk show appearance. The world champion said her comments stemmed from long-suppressed emotional distress following personal and marital issues, and were not intended to target men or any community at large.

The controversy began after an emotional segment on Aap Ki Adalat, where Kom spoke candidly about her personal life. A particular remark — “Ek rupiya bhi nahi kamaya” (not a single rupee was earned) — went viral, with many interpreting it as a slight on her former partner’s career and contributions.

Clarifying her stance, Mary Kom stressed that her marriage was not always unsuccessful and that she chose to maintain dignified silence even after the couple separated. She said her comments were made in an emotional moment and should not be taken out of context.

A section of the criticism also came from sports enthusiasts who felt her remarks undermined the struggles of aspiring footballers. Responding to this, Kom rejected any suggestion of bias against the sport, expressing admiration for football and citing Indian captain Sunil Chhetri as an example of the perseverance and discipline she respects.
