The NBA has issued financial penalties to Nikola Jokić and Julius Randle following an on-court confrontation at the conclusion of Saturday night’s Game 4 between the Denver Nuggets and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Jokić received a $50,000 fine for initiating the incident, while Randle was fined $35,000 for his role in escalating the conflict. Although both players were ejected during the skirmish, the league’s subsequent review determined that no suspensions were warranted.

Origins of the Altercation

The friction began with just 1.3 seconds remaining in a game that had effectively been decided. Jokić took offence when Timberwolves wing Jaden McDaniels attempted a layup in the closing moments. The Nuggets centre sprinted across the hardwood to confront McDaniels, who had previously criticised the defensive capabilities of several Denver players, including Jokić, earlier in the series.

As Jokić reached McDaniels near the Minnesota bench, a crowd formed and chaos ensued. Randle intervened aggressively to defend his teammate, resulting in his ejection. The league specifically cited Randle’s decision to forcefully insert himself into the fray and shove Bruce Brown as the justification for his fine.

Disciplinary Review and Series Impact

Despite the intensity of the exchange, officials noted that no punches were thrown, which likely factored into the decision to forgo suspensions. Any missed games could have significantly shifted the momentum of the series, particularly as Minnesota currently leads Denver 3–1.

The Timberwolves are already navigating the series without Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo, making further absences a precarious prospect. Meanwhile, the Nuggets remain reliant on Jokić as they face elimination heading into Monday night’s (local time) contest in Denver.

Bench Decorum and Oversight

The league’s investigation also scrutinised the actions of Aaron Gordon and Jonas Valančiūnas, both of whom were observed in the crowd near the Minnesota bench despite not being active in the game at the time of the incident.

NBA regulations strictly prohibit players from leaving the bench area during an on-court altercation, an offence that typically carries an automatic suspension and a substantial fine. However, in this instance, the league declined to issue such penalties. A suspension for Gordon would have been a particularly heavy blow for a Nuggets team fighting to keep its season alive.
