Williams withdraws from Barcelona test: FW48 delays sideline Albon and Sainz

The Atlassian Williams F1 Team announced Friday it will skip next week’s highly anticipated shakedown test in Barcelona, citing production delays for its 2026 challenger.
The decision comes amid reports that the team’s new car, the FW48, has struggled to pass mandatory FIA crash tests, a critical requirement for any on-track running. Other reports suggest the team is battling significant technical issues, including a chassis that is currently over the minimum weight limit.
In a formal statement, the Grove-based outfit confirmed it will not join the other 10 teams, including the debuting Cadillac squad, at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the private three-day event.
“Atlassian Williams F1 Team has taken the decision not to participate in next week’s shakedown test in Barcelona following delays in the FW48 programme as we continue to push for maximum car performance,” the team said.
Alternative Testing Strategy
To mitigate the loss of track time, Williams intends to pivot to internal simulation. The team will conduct a VTT (Virtual Track Testing) programme next week to prepare for the first official pre-season test in Bahrain, scheduled for February 11–13.
The setback is a blow for drivers Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, who now face a significantly reduced preparation window before the season opener in Melbourne. By missing the Barcelona sessions, the duo will lose roughly one-third of their permitted pre-season mileage.
Context of the 2026 Regulations
The 2026 season marks one of the most drastic technical shifts in Formula 1 history, featuring:
- Power Units: A move to a 50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power.
- Active Aerodynamics: The introduction of movable wing elements to replace traditional DRS.
- Chassis: Shorter and narrower cars designed for better manoeuvrability.
Williams is not the only team facing early hurdles; McLaren has also confirmed it will miss the opening day of the Barcelona test, though it expects to run later in the week.
