Celebrated Chess Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky passes away at 29

Daniel Naroditsky, a 29-year-old chess grandmaster from the Bay Area, passed away unexpectedly, his family announced on Monday. A Stanford University graduate and one of America’s most respected chess figures, Naroditsky was admired for his exceptional talent as a player, commentator, and educator. His family, in a statement via the Charlotte Chess Center, described him as a passionate ambassador of the game who inspired countless fans and players worldwide.

Born in San Mateo, Naroditsky’s chess journey began early. He won the Northern California K-12 Chess Championship as a child and claimed gold in the Under-12 section of the 2007 World Youth Chess Championship. He later captured the U.S. Junior Championship in 2013, the same year he earned his grandmaster title, and received the Samford Chess Fellowship in 2014.

Naroditsky was a consistent presence among the world’s elite, ranking within the top 200 globally and top 15 in the U.S. in classical chess. In blitz, he reached a peak FIDE rating of 2732 in 2025, placing him 18th in the world. Beyond competitive play, he gained immense popularity as a content creator, with over 800,000 combined followers on Twitch and YouTube, where he produced educational and analytical chess content.
