Spain beat Uruguay 1-0 in their final FIFA World Cup Group H match on Friday to secure top spot in the group and book a place in the Round of 32, while Marcelo Bielsa's side exited the tournament.

Álex Baena scored the decisive goal in the 42nd minute after Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera failed to deal with his effort, gifting Spain the breakthrough in Guadalajara. Muslera was replaced at halftime following the costly error.

Luis de la Fuente's side controlled possession for much of the contest and limited Uruguay's attacking opportunities despite the South Americans' desperate search for an equaliser.

Spain came close to extending their advantage late in the second half, with Ferran Torres striking the crossbar.

Uruguay, which entered the match needing a victory to guarantee qualification after draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, struggled to create clear-cut chances.

Unai Simón made key saves to preserve Spain's lead, while Agustín Canobbio was sent off deep into stoppage time after receiving a red card.

The victory saw Spain finish as Group H winners and advance to the knockout stage with seven points.

Uruguay, meanwhile, ended their campaign without a win and were eliminated from the tournament after collecting just two points from three matches.

Spain will now face the Group J runners-up in the Round of 32 as they continue their bid for a second FIFA World Cup title.
