Aston Villa also have history in the competition. The English club won their only previous Super Cup appearance in 1982, defeating Barcelona over two legs.
The two teams are familiar with each other after meeting in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2025. PSG progressed 5-4 on aggregate, although Villa won the second leg 3-2 at home.
Why Salzburg is significant
The match will be the first major UEFA club final hosted at Stadion Salzburg. The venue staged three matches during Euro 2008 and is home to FC Salzburg.
It is the 14th venue to host the Super Cup since UEFA moved the fixture away from its traditional home in Monaco.
The trophy itself stands 58cm tall and weighs 12.2kg. The current design has been used since 2006.
With no extra time scheduled, a tight contest could be decided from the penalty spot. Historically, Champions League holders have dominated the fixture, winning 30 of the competition's 50 editions.
