Atlanta: Spain's hopes of bouncing back from a surprise draw against Cape Verde may rest heavily on teenage star Lamine Yamal, but the Barcelona winger has warned that he is still recovering from injury and is not ready to play a full 90 minutes.

European champions Spain national football team head into their second Group H match under pressure after being held to a goalless draw by tournament debutants Cape Verde.

With Saudi Arabia next on the schedule, attention has turned to Lamine Yamal, whose brief appearance from the bench against Cape Verde immediately injected energy into Spain's attack.

The 18-year-old winger made his first appearance since suffering a hamstring injury in April, coming on in the 71st minute. Although he could not help Spain find a winning goal, his impact highlighted how much the team missed his creativity and direct running.

Yamal delivers fitness warning

Despite growing calls for him to start against Saudi Arabia, Yamal has cautioned that he is not yet ready for a complete match.

The Barcelona star said it was still too early for him to play the full 90 minutes and that he would instead play whatever role coach Luis de la Fuente believes is appropriate.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente indicated earlier that Yamal could be available for around an hour of action against Saudi Arabia, suggesting the youngster's minutes will continue to be managed carefully.

Spain's attack misses its cutting edge

Spain dominated possession against Cape Verde but struggled to convert that control into meaningful chances. Their usually fluid attacking system lacked pace and penetration until Yamal entered the game.

The absence of Yamal and fellow winger Nico Williams from the starting lineup left Spain without their most dangerous one-on-one attackers.

Midfielder Mikel Merino described Yamal as a special player capable of changing matches at any moment, while defender Pau Cubarsi expressed confidence that the teenager would play a major role in Spain's campaign.

World Cup struggles continue

The draw against Cape Verde revived concerns about Spain's record at the World Cup since winning the trophy in 2010.

Despite claiming three major international titles during that period, Spain have failed to progress beyond the last 16 at any World Cup since their triumph in South Africa.

The team's inability to convert possession into goals has become a recurring theme. Spain's control of matches has often not translated into results, including disappointing exits against Japan and Morocco in previous tournaments.

Saudi Arabia clash grows in importance

The expanded 48-team World Cup format gives Spain more room to recover from a slow start, but Sunday's meeting with Saudi Arabia national football team has taken on added significance.

A victory would place Spain firmly back on track for the knockout stages, while another setback would intensify scrutiny on a side that entered the tournament among the favourites.

For now, Spain's hopes appear closely tied to Yamal's fitness. The teenager's influence was immediately evident against Cape Verde, and many now believe his return could determine whether Spain mount a serious challenge for a second World Cup title.
