Fulham hold Liverpool 2-2 after Reed’s stunning stoppage-time strike

London: Liverpool were denied a dramatic victory as Harrison Reed struck a sensational stoppage-time equaliser to earn Fulham a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Cody Gakpo appeared to have sealed all three points for Liverpool when he scored in the fourth minute of added time, only for Reed to respond moments later with a thunderous long-range effort that stunned the visitors and dented their Premier League top-four ambitions.

Arne Slot’s side had earlier fallen behind to Harry Wilson’s first-half opener on a controversial afternoon marked by multiple VAR interventions.

Wilson’s goal was initially ruled out for offside before a video review overturned the decision, allowing the former Liverpool player to celebrate. While that call appeared justified, Fulham were left frustrated later when Florian Wirtz’s equaliser stood despite replays suggesting the German was marginally offside.

Liverpool, who sit fourth, extended their unbeaten run to nine matches in all competitions ahead of Thursday’s crucial trip to league leaders Arsenal. However, the performance again raised questions after their goalless draw with Leeds on New Year’s Day.

With Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations and both Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak sidelined through injury, Slot fielded a makeshift frontline featuring Wirtz, Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes following a medical emergency in the stands, and Liverpool struggled to find rhythm early on. Gakpo spurned two presentable chances before Fulham capitalised in the 17th minute.

Raul Jimenez split the Liverpool defence with a precise through ball, catching Virgil van Dijk flat-footed as Wilson raced clear and calmly beat Alisson Becker. The goal survived a VAR review after initially being flagged for offside.

Liverpool came close to responding early in the second half when Alexis Mac Allister’s powerful header from a Szoboszlai corner crashed against the crossbar.

The equaliser arrived in the 57th minute as Conor Bradley surged through midfield and slid a pass into Wirtz, who finished clinically from close range. Although initially ruled out for offside, VAR overturned the decision, allowing the German to celebrate his second goal since joining from Bayer Leverkusen.

Fulham went close to restoring their lead when Jimenez broke through on goal, only to be denied, with Wilson striking the rebound against the bar before Van Dijk cleared off the line.

Liverpool thought they had escaped when Gakpo turned in Jeremie Frimpong’s cross from close range in stoppage time. But Fulham had the final say as Reed unleashed an unstoppable 30-yard strike into the top corner, securing a deserved point and sending Craven Cottage into raptures.
