New Delhi: Indian football's former head coach, Igor Stimac, has approached FIFA demanding compensation for the remainder of his contract. Stimac, who was dismissed by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) following a disappointing performance in the World Cup qualifiers, is seeking payment until June 2026.

Stimac, a Croatian, was replaced by Spanish coach Manolo Márquez after the team's failure to progress in the World Cup qualification rounds. According to his contract, Stimac was set to remain in the position until June 2026, with a salary of approximately Rs 25 lakhs per month until January 2025, after which it would rise to Rs 33.50 lakhs.

Stimac is claiming compensation of around Rs 7.50 crores, including interest, for the remainder of his contract. The AIFF had initially offered three months’ salary as severance, but Stimac rejected this offer.

Stimac was appointed as the Indian football team coach in 2019 and had his contract renewed in 2023. During his tenure, he managed the team in 53 matches, securing 19 wins, 14 draws, and 20 losses. Under his guidance, the team won the SAFF Championship, the Tri-Nation Series, and the Intercontinental Cup. However, the team's inability to advance past the third round of World Cup qualifiers led to severe criticism and ultimately his dismissal.
