The Indian women’s cricket team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, scripted history by winning their first-ever ICC ODI World Cup title after defeating South Africa by 52 runs in Sunday’s final. Their victory brought not only glory but also record-breaking cash rewards.

ICC gives record prize money for women’s ODI win

The International Cricket Council (ICC) awarded $4.48 million (around Rs 40 crore) to the Indian women’s team for their World Cup triumph. This winner’s purse marked a 239% increase from the 2022 edition and even surpassed the $4 million prize awarded to the men’s ODI World Cup winners in 2023.

The ICC’s revised prize structure, announced in September, was part of its push to ensure women cricketers receive recognition and rewards closer to their male counterparts.

BCCI announces Rs 51 crore reward for champions

Adding to the celebrations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a Rs 51 crore cash prize for the women’s team, its support staff, and the national selection committee.

“As a token of appreciation, the BCCI will reward the Indian women’s cricket team with a cash award of Rs 51 crore,” said BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla.

The BCCI also praised Jay Shah, who, as its secretary and now ICC chairman, has played a key role in expanding women’s cricket through new tournaments, improved infrastructure, and professional structures.

Women’s total: Rs 91 crore; men’s total: Rs 145.4 crore

Together, the women’s team earned an impressive Rs 91 crore — including Rs 40 crore from the ICC and Rs 51 crore from the BCCI.

In comparison, the men’s team, which won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024, received a much higher total of Rs 145.4 crore — Rs 20.4 crore from the ICC and a massive Rs 125 crore bonus from the BCCI. That’s about Rs 54 crore more than the women’s ODI champions.

ICC’s move marks progress for women’s game

While the men’s team continues to earn more overall, the ICC’s record prize boost for the women’s ODI World Cup marks an important shift towards equality. It shows growing global respect for women’s cricket and a sign that the gap, though still large, is slowly narrowing.

States honour local players

Several state governments have also announced special cash rewards for women cricketers from their states who played in the World Cup final, adding to the nationwide celebration of India’s historic victory
