Surya set to pip Pandya as India's T20I skipper: Report

New Delhi: Suryakumar Yadav has emerged as a surprising but favoured candidate to take over as India's T20 captain until the 2026 World Cup, potentially superseding the expected successor, Hardik Pandya. Following Rohit Sharma's retirement from T20 internationals after India's recent World Cup victory, the leadership vacancy arose, initially positioning Pandya, previously the vice-captain under Sharma, as the natural heir.
However, recent developments indicate a shift in this plan. Gautam Gambhir, the newly appointed head coach, and Ajit Agarkar, chairman of selectors, have reportedly expressed a preference for Suryakumar Yadav (SKY) as the long-term captain. This decision comes despite Pandya's availability and fitness for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka, where he was expected to lead the team.
The 33-year-old Suryakumar Yadav, affectionately known as 'SKY,' has garnered significant support within the Indian cricketing circles, particularly for his leadership during eight T20Is against Australia and South Africa last year. His popularity within the dressing room and his strong performances in the IPL, notably under Gambhir's captaincy at Kolkata Knight Riders, have bolstered his candidacy.
In contrast, Hardik Pandya's recent stint as captain of Mumbai Indians in the IPL was underwhelming, and concerns have been raised over his ability to commit fully to national team duties, prompting selectors to seek a more stable and committed leadership option.
While Pandya remains a vital player in the squad, his decision to skip the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka due to personal reasons has raised eyebrows. Despite clarifications that his absence is not due to fitness issues, the selectors seem inclined towards a strategic long-term leadership under Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is.
Looking ahead, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), under the directive of secretary Jay Shah, emphasises the importance of domestic cricket commitments even for star players during breaks from international duty. This policy underscores the need for consistency and availability across formats, aligning with the BCCI's approach to ensure players prioritise national duty alongside personal milestones.
As the selectors prepare to announce the squad for the upcoming series, including potential leadership roles for ODIs, names like KL Rahul and Shubman Gill are being considered. The decision-making process reflects a broader strategy aimed at stability and continuity in India's cricketing leadership, setting the stage for Suryakumar Yadav to potentially lead the T20 side into the next World Cup cycle.
On a whole, while Hardik Pandya remains a pivotal figure in Indian cricket, the selectors and team management seem inclined towards entrusting Suryakumar Yadav with the T20 captaincy, emphasising his leadership qualities and potential for long-term strategic planning in the format. PTI
