Currently sitting on 2,843 runs from 40 Test appearances, the 26-year-old skipper has the opportunity to outpace established senior stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to achieve the landmark first.

Gill’s journey to the brink of 3,000 WTC runs is a complete dramatic career evolution. He announced his arrival on the international stage as an opening prodigy during India’s legendary 2020–21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph, playing a starring role with a stroke-filled 91 on the final day of the historic fourth Test at the Gabba.

While initially starting his Test career at the top of the order, Gill subsequently made the strategic transition down to the pivotal No. 3 position. Over successive WTC campaigns, he refined his defensive technique against foreign seam and developed fluid footwork against subcontinental spin, transforming into the cornerstone of India’s middle order before assuming the Test captaincy.

Gill has already compiled 950 runs in the 2025-27 WTC cycle at a staggering average of 79.16, headlined by five centuries—including a career-best 269 against England at Edgbaston in 2025. A mere 50 additional runs in Galle will also see him become the first Indian captain to score 1,000 runs in a single WTC cycle.
