Following a disappointing group-stage exit at the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has appointed Ibrahim Zadran as the new T20I captain. Zadran, who previously served as vice-captain, succeeds star leg-spinner Rashid Khan.

Strategic leadership shift

Chief selector Ahmad Shah Sulimankhil reportedly described the move as part of a long-term vision to revitalize the squad under a new head coach. While acknowledging Rashid Khan’s successful tenure—most notably leading Afghanistan to the 2024 World Cup semi-finals—the board believes Zadran is the right choice to build "bench strength" for upcoming global events.

Squad overhaul

The transition includes significant roster changes for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka:

Out: Key veterans such as Fazal Haq Farooqi, Gulbadin Naib, and Mohammad Ishaq.

In: New faces including Noor Rahman, Sharafuddin Ashraf, and Fareed Ahmad.

Security concerns

The ACB is also closely monitoring regional tensions stemming from the Israel–Iran conflict. While the current plan is to proceed with the original schedule in coordination with the officials, the board remains prepared to explore alternative venues or dates if the security situation necessitates a change.

The primary goal of this overhaul is to ensure the national team is "mentally fresh" and competitively prepared for the next two World Cup cycles. (With inputs from Agencies)
