T20 World Cup 2026: After India defeat, Pakistan set to drop Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi

Colombo: Pakistan may make major changes to their playing XI for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 match against Namibia, with senior players Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi likely to be rested following the heavy defeat against India, according to reports citing team management sources.

Pakistan suffered a 61-run loss to India in Colombo, a result that has reportedly triggered discussions within the team management over performance and team selection.

A source close to the team told PTI that PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed dissatisfaction over the team’s performance and conveyed his concerns to the team management.

The source also claimed that Naqvi left the stadium before the match ended as Pakistan struggled during the run chase.

Following the defeat, head coach Mike Hesson reportedly spoke to the players in the dressing room, stressing that the team had not performed to its potential.

Possible changes for Namibia match

According to the report, the team management is considering dropping Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi and giving opportunities to other players, including Fakhar Zaman, Naseem Shah, or Salman Mirza.

The management is also said to be exploring younger options in the middle order as Pakistan looks for a fresh approach ahead of crucial matches.

Must-win game for Pakistan

Pakistan cannot afford another setback if they want to qualify for the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup. While they managed wins against the USA and the Netherlands earlier, the defeat against India has increased pressure on the team ahead of the Namibia clash.
